RivStrong Athletics

CrossFit Riverfront supports healthy minds, healthy bodies for local kids!

CrossFit Riverfront is excited to announce that we are partnering up with local school districts to offer an after school program! RivStrong Athletics combines both education and fitness together at participating schools.

The education component will be managed by a teacher representative who will focus on enrichment in areas established by the school. The fitness component will be a CrossFit class— real life, functional movements at relatively high intensities— taught by an experienced coach from CrossFit Riverfront. The students will be challenged daily by their varying workouts: this conditioning can easily translate into after school sports, as well as ensuring a regular fitness routine to stay healthy.

No experience is required! CrossFit Riverfront is fully staffed with CrossFit Level 1 Trainers who will coach the kids through workouts safely, while also motivating them to rise to the challenge. Our goal is to make fitness fun!

This program is open to ALL students, regardless of skill or previous athletic experience. RivStrong will keep your student involved and active, or ready for the next sport’s season.

  • RivStrong will incorporate a monthly or quarterly focus, as well as an incentive program to keep the students on track. This will culminate in an end of the year competition held at CrossFit Riverfront.
  • Adult advocates from the community will visit the students to discuss topics that promote fitness and health.
  • RivStrong will also encourage parental involvement through student-parent nights throughout the year.

Our goals are to promote higher self-esteem, self-awareness, team building, and community empowerment to our students!

October Athletes of the Month

Posted October 27, 2015

Congratulations to the October Athletes of the Month: Andrew Walker, Kate Armstrong, Eloy Vidales and Brittany Newcomer!

ANDREW WALKER

What made you decide to join the Riv?

I decided to join the Riv to give myself a change than going to the YMCA. I was in and out of trying different routines that I would find on the internet and after a while I got bored. I began to lose interest in working out and decide to see what crossfit had to offer. I had friends that belong to the Riv so I decided one day to sign up and give it a try. A year later and I am still here!

How has Crossfit Riverfront helped you reach some of your fitness goals?

I enjoy that I am able to work on my endurance and speed as well as being able to build strength and muscle. I was a competitive cyclist and swimmer for many years through high school and college and wanted to get back to that high level of physical fitness. Even if I no longer swim or bike, Crossfit enables me to stay in great shape and get stronger each and every day.

What has been your favorite workout? What have you improved on most?

My favorite workout is Fran. This was the first name WOD I did and it kicked my ass. I really struggled to finish and at the end had quite an out of body experience the first time. Since then I have improved dramatically and love the challenge of pushing myself to get better each time.

The lift that I have improved on the most is definitely my power snatch. I would say that over the last year I have really made some great strides.

What is your favorite part of the Riv?

My experience with the Riv has been great since I started about a year ago. Not only is so much fun but I love the sense of community combined with the opportunity to work towards my physical fitness goals.

KATE ARMSTRONG

What made you decide to join the Riv?

I joined the Riv early in 2015 when I moved down to the Riverfront. I’ve always enjoyed being active and pushing myself to try new things so i figured “why not!” Who can pass up a gym within walking distance on their days off from working twelve hour shifts?!

How has CrossFit Riverfront helped you reach some of your fitness goals?

The Riv has helped me take my fitness to a new level. While I work in health care, I don’t know how to find the right workout regime to really feel and see a difference in my short little self. The coaches and fellow athletes have helped me strive for more in every workout.

What has been your favorite workout? What have you improved on most?

My favorite workout is rowing…HA NOT! My favorite, by far, have been the holiday workouts. The energy and enthusiasm amongst the staff and athletes is contagious!

What is your favorite part of the Riv?

Let’s be real…the new fan over the Riv Fit section is awesome! But can’t beat the role model athletes I get to interact with on a frequent basis. I’m beyond grateful for the friendships I have made and am excited to meet more members as time continues.

ELOY VIDALES

What made you decide to join the Riv?

I joined the Riv because I wanted to ramp up my fitness. I came to the right place.

How has CrossFit Riverfront helped you reach some of your fitness goals?

I’ve noticed over time my stamina is approving during longer WODs. I’m still not there but the RivFit aspect has been key.

What has been your favorite workout? What have you improved on most?

My favorite workout, well I’m not sure I can say I have a favorite but I certainly like the intrigue walking into the Riv having no clue what I’m in store for. Most improved has been rowing, although I need to improve on longer rowing evolutions.

What is your favorite part of the Riv?

My favorite part is being around great coaching, and motivated athletes it keeps me going when I’m running out of fuel.

Thanks for selecting me, I’ll keep working hard!

BRITTANY NEWCOMER

What made you decide to join the Riv?

Burpee box jumps… I kid you not. I was deciding between two Crossfit gyms: the Riv and one closer to my house. I had gotten pretty out of shape after graduating and starting my big girl job so I was looking for something to kick my butt and motivate me to get back at it. I looked up discounts for crossfit gyms and found a groupon for RivFit which promised to tone me up and decided to give it a try. My first class the workout was burpee box jumps and weighted lunges. That workout was one of the hardest I’ve ever done and I remember being more sore the next day than I’d ever been before. I knew I was hooked when I wanted to go back the next day even though I was walking like a baby deer on ice for the first time with my sore legs. The environment and the coaches during my 1 month trial convinced me the Riv was where I wanted to be.

How has CrossFit Riverfront helped you reach some of your fitness goals?

I was able to lose the weight I gained after college and put on some muscle in its place. I also eat a lot cleaner than I used to.

What has been your favorite workout? What have you improved on most?

Throwback to my RivFit days, anything with man makers in it 🙂 Favorite crossfit workout was the 100-80-60-40-20-10 DUs, 10-8-6-4-2 snatches (alternating)

My cardio is much better than it used to be.

What is your favorite part of the Riv?

The community and the people that make it up. Can’t find that anywhere else.

THANK YOU For Your Support: #EsmondStrong Recap

Posted October 23, 2015

It’s at times like these that we are especially proud and grateful to be part of the CrossFit community.

On October 3rd, CrossFit Riverfront hosted a fundraiser benefiting A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital on behalf of the Esmond brothers, who continue to recover from pesticide exposure while vacationing in the Virgin Islands. Members were joined by Sean and Ryan Esmond’s parents, Stephen Esmond and Theresa Devine; other members of the Esmond’s friends and family; members of the Tatnall community, visitors from area CrossFit boxes and more for our #EsmondStrong event. Over 300 people were in attendance.

Coach Jeff and members of his box, CrossFit Mindset, joined us in spirit as they carried out the WOD and raised funds from California.

We Are #Esmond Strong from Philly Philms on Vimeo.

The workout itself was a 13 minute AMRAP of 3 burpees, 6 air squats and 9 situps, scaled as necessary for those who were new to CrossFit workouts. The 13 minutes was a nod to the year 2013, when the Esmond boys joined the box; 6 and 9 were their lacrosse numbers. There were four heats as participants at all athletic levels, from a wide range of ages, gave their all for 13 minutes in tribute to the ongoing resilience of the Esmond family.

When not sprinting through burpees, squats and situps, participants and spectators noshed on eats provided by Kettlebell Kitchen and took their chances on raffle prizes from Reebok, Hylete, Kill Cliff, Caveman Coffee and other donors. The event was covered by 6ABC which helped fuel more donations even after the event had ended.

We are so proud and honored to have been able to present A.I. DuPont Hospital with a check for $25,000 on behalf of Sean and Ryan Esmond! Given that our original goal was 1/10th that amount ($2500), we can only thank everyone who donated for their amazing generosity and support contributing to the success of #EsmondStrong. We’re also grateful for the media coverage we received and hope it will spur others to continue to support the work that A.I. does every day.

Some fitness fanatics from Wilmington came together Saturday in honor of two teenagers still hospitalized after getting sick while on vacation in the Virgin Islands.

The benefit featured the favorite exercises of Sean and Ryan Esmond, members of the Cross Fit Riverfront gym.

The boys and their parents, Stephen Esmond and Theresa Devine, who were present during the benefit, were exposed to poisonous pesticides back in March.

All proceeds from the benefit will go to the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children where Sean and Ryan are being treated.
